Students come to the study of sociology with a wide variety of interests. In order to help you identify groups of courses that might be of particular interest to you, we have organized our courses into 'areas of emphasis.' In these 'areas of emphasis', you'll find common themes or subjects that build on each other and combine well with a range of second major or minor fields of study.

If you are interested in SOCIAL INEQUALITY, consider:

  • SOC 304: Social Stratification
  • SOC 325: Race & Ethnicity
  • SOC 326: Gender
  • SOC 327: Law & Inequality
  • SOC 330: Sociology of Education
  • SOC 340: Social Movements
  • Students interested in this area may also want to consider a concentration in Women's Studies, a minor in Native American Studies or additional course work in the History department (which offers a variety of related courses).

If you are interested in FAMILY RELATIONS/CHILDREN, consider:

  • You may also want to consider taking HDFS 101 (Lifespan Human Development) or PSY 100 (Introduction to Psychology)

If you are interested in BUSINESS or MANAGEMENT consider:

  • SOC 337: Organizational and Occupational Crime

If you are interested in MARKETING or PUBLIC RELATIONS, consider:

  • You may also want to take additional courses in Statistics, including STAT 216 and STAT 217.
